Achamore Gardens Description
About a mile off the west coast of the Mull of Kintyre lies the Isle of Gigha. In the days when the Queen was allowed to have a Royal Yacht, Gigha was a favourite stopping place for a picnic on its progress north. Paradise it is, and the gardens of Achamore House are just a part of that judgement. A Heritage Trust was established in 2002 and is thriving.
50 acres of natural woodland at Achamore contain a large walled garden with many rare plants and trees thriving in this frost-free island. Cattle graze in fields covered in orchids. Plant sales represent a real opportunity for the questing plantsman. The gardens are open from dawn to dusk all year round and cars aren't allowed on the island. Bliss.

Another excellent spring visit to the gardens with the added attraction of the young peacocks in the walled garden. Could I please have the correct name of the shrub with the small bell shaped lilac flowers with yellow throat? It had a label but I failed to take a note! It began with "Jove" followed by I think Campanula. I look forward to my next visit.
