Description
Belchamp Hall is a beautiful Queen Anne period English country house set in expansive grounds in the rolling hills south of Sudbury in Suffolk. The house is available for hire for conferences and retreats, weddings and dinners, parties and celebrations.
The house was built in 1720 in the Queen Anne style. The house is dignified, not grandiose, and it settles comfortably into its surroundings of mature hedged gardens, manicured lawns and tall trees. The house played a starring role in the TV series "Lovejoy", as the home of Lovejoy's romantic interest, Lady Jane.
Facing south-east, the driveway from the house leads directly to the ancient 14th century brick and flint parish church of St Mary with its famous medieval wall paintings. Being just a short distance from the parish church, the house is an ideal venue for weddings and wedding receptions.
On the inside, the house is little altered from the original. The central hall is hung with family portraits, and leads into a broad elegant staircase up to the upper rooms. To the right of the hallway is the dining room, which is panelled with oak and chestnut which is believed to have come from the original Elizabethan house that was pulled down when the present house was built on the site.
The Raymond family have lived at Belchamp Hall since 1450, although the present Queen Anne Period House was not built until 1720, and their Estate runs to 1500 acres which is farmed with regards to maintaining the spectacular countryside which surrounds the Hall. The family runs a private pheasant shoot and value the conservation of their land very highly.
Corporate Use
Belchamp Hall is available for conferences and corporate entertainment, with marvellous facilities, from an off-road driving course to numerous other outdoor activities, with catering tailored for the particular occasion. One of greatest advantages of the Belchamp Hall location is the privacy that it affords. In recent years they have played host to conferences, art exhibitions, filming and advertising companies, car launches, weddings, concerts, garden open days, vintage car rallies, clay pigeon shoots and the like. For more details about the facilities available at Belchamp, visit their
Website.
Filming
Belchamp Hall achieved possibly its greatest fame by being used by the BBC for several series of 'Lovejoy' about a roguish antique dealer, in which it was the home of Lady Jane, his love interest. The extremely popular programmes, starring Ian McShane as the not always completely straight Lovejoy, much to the annoyance of the many reputable country antique dealers, brought much attention and admiration to Belchamp Hall.
Weddings
Weddings can be arranged with marquees and a reception on the lawn at Belchamp Hall with catering provided to the specification of the client. The marriage ceremony can be performed in the beautiful ancient Church of St Mary, which dates from the 13th Century.
