Auckland Castle Description

Historically the principal country residence of the Prince Bishops and now the official home of the Bishop of Durham. Located on a promontory overlooking the Rivers Wear and Gaunless, Auckland Castle is ten miles south-west of the city of Durham on the edge of Bishop Auckland.

Originally a fortified manor house in the 12th century, Auckland Castle has been extended approximately every 200 years. Each addition visually emphasises the historical role and position of the Bishops in all aspects of life. More than just head of the Diocese, the Prince Bishop was part churchman, part soldier and part politician. Often without peers, he would reign over the Northern Province on behalf of the King.

The glory of Auckland Castle is the magnificent St. Peter’s Chapel, reputedly one of the largest private chapels in Europe. It was originally the great banqueting hall of the Norman building and observant visitors will be able to identify one of the finest examples of a medieval aisled hall in the North of England. Converted and consecrated in the 17th century by Bishop John Cousin, the Chapel still serves the local community as well as the resident Bishop.
