Your Reviews of Baconsthorpe Castle

Having visited Margaret's Tea Shop in a neighbouring village we vistied this place of magnificence for the first time. It has a romantic presence surrounding the ruins that one can almost feel oozing from the stonework. Baconsthorpe Castle seems to sing it's own song, a melody that touches the soul. It was on 2 separate occasions we visited this beautiful place, on each occasion so very different the experience. Once was in the height of summertime and the other on a stormy November day. On both occasions it didn't cease to inspire my poetic scrawl nor the music of my fiancé’s guitar. This place is majestic. It whispered to me and in my opinion it captivates both heart and soul.

My first impressions of this wonderful place. Travel down the farm track to Baconsthorpe Castle, over the cattle grids and park up in front of the gatehouse. Stand a moment to really appreciate the amazing Flint cladding that covers the remains of what was once a fairly spectacular building, not huge not imposing, just nice. On a calm warm summer evening you can hear nature doing its stuff, you can feel how next to nature this place really was. As you walk through he gatehouse and along the small path to the recently place bridge crossing over the token moat, to the left and right of the main tower are drains into the moat. Look to the right from the bridge and see the lake, peaceful and tranquil. Wander through the tower, there are rooms to the left and right inside the tower. Out into the grassed courtyard, see the wells in the far right corner another tower. a wall running all around you. Stand in the middle of the grassy expanse and spin on the spot in a circle, really, really quietly. Pretty cool I think, if I feel low or need some down time away from the grind of daily life, I can always find it here.
