Chillington Hall Summary

Chillington Hall Description

Chillington Hall, in South Staffordshire, has been the home of the Giffard family for more than 800 years, and the present owner is the 29th Giffard to live at the Hall. The fine Georgian house is the third to be built on the site and sits magnificently in the landscaped parkland designed by Capability Brown during the 1760s, and as it now stands presents an interesting contrast in architectural styles.

The modern Chillington aims to preserve what is best of the past, whilst adapting and modernising for the future. The Chillington Estate extends to approximately 4,000 acres. The mixed farming system includes beef, sheep and arable crops and here are many habitats on the farm, including extensive woodland, parkland, a lake and a fine network of hedgerows.

Chillington seeks to farm in a manner that is compatible with wildlife conservation and enhances the whole landscape. It is possible to learn about the management of the farm as you follow the walk round the pool.

The Hall:

The present house was built in two parts. In 1724 Francis Smith was commissioned to build a new wing on the Tudor house. This contains a fine staircase and a pretty Morning Room.

In 1786 Thomas Giffard engaged John Soane, then a young and up and coming architect to build the present house, retaining the Smith wing and removing all traces of the Tudor house. Outside, in the Park, Capability Brown laid out the Park and Lake.

A tour of the house reveals the morning room, a fine entrance hall with magnificent Georgian joinery on the main staircase, and the saloon with clerestory lighting and a fine example of Soane’s love of contrasting curves. The dining room serves as a place for the display of family portraits, and the drawing room retains the original fittings made for it.

The public rooms are available for corporate and private hire (see below).

Weddings:

Chillington Hall is available for weddings on an exclusive basis. Civil Ceremonies take place in the stunning Long Room, while the Saloon, an impressive centrepiece to the hall with its domed ceiling and huge stone fireplace, holds up to 80 guests for the wedding breakfast. Smaller parties may wish to use the beautiful dining room, seating approx 30 guests, and for larger weddings and evening receptions there is an immaculate marquee arranged on the South Lawn to accommodate up to 250 guests. Larger parties can be catered for on request.

Chillington Hall offers a full wedding planning service, with a small, but committed, team, who are passionate about working with you to organise your dream wedding date. They appreciate that everybody has their own individual preferences and ideas on how their special day should be conducted, and the team at Chillington Hall will do their very best to ensure all your wishes are met.

The Park:

‘Capability’ Brown gave his distinctive touch the parks and garden throughout the country, and Chillington is a good example of his work. The Long Avenue of oak trees dates from around the 17th century and there are number of interesting Follies.

Brown also designed the lake and canal, and an attractive walk takes in some of the most scenic parts of the Park. Bring a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Corporate Opportunities:

The Hall and grounds are ideal for all types of corporate events, with plenty of space, varying terrain and excellent access from the M6 and M54, with Wolverhampton, Lichfield and Stafford all close to hand. Promotional launches, dinners, balls, black tie occasions, company entertainment, photo shoots and marquee functions are typical of the kind of events that find an ideal home within the Chillington setting.

Chillington staff are qualified to organise the events and advise on location, menu, travel and accommodation, if so required.

Visiting Chillington:

Chillington Hall is not open every day. Please check their opening times by visiting their Website. The owners are more than willing to welcome visitors outside of normal opening days, by special arrangement.
