Cobham Hall Description
To say that the south east of England is awash with great Elizabethan houses is really no surprise. This was the first Great Age of expansion, a follow on from the Tudors and enormous wealth, a more than passable climate and proximity to the continent and London did the rest.
Cobham Hall is a private school, so no admission, but it doesn’t really seem to matter because the star of the show is the garden, much of it arranged by Humphry Repton who liked straight lines in gardens. He would not have approved of the modern Elizabethan garden in front of the house, but many visitors do. His temple and pump house remain still.
Repton’s famous Red Book is being followed as the restoration of the garden continues by the Cobham Hall Heritage Trust. If you are in to Repton, Cobham is well worth a visit. If you just like a change from dear old Capability it is still visit-worthy.
