Combermere Abbey Description
Combermere Abbey lies on the heritage rich borderlands of Cheshire and Shropshire. For over 850 years this historic estate has captured the imagination of many visitors – its magical setting with the large mere, verdant woods and parkland. Since the Dissolution in 1538, when Henry VIII closed the Cistercian monastery established in 1133, the Abbey and its lands have been home to only two families - the Cotton family whose most famous member, Sir Stapleton Cotton became the 1st Viscount Combermere, and the Crossley family, who have been its custodians since 1919.
Today, the estate, while smaller in size, is still in private ownership and during the past fifteen years a programme of restoration works has seen a renaissance in several of the listed buildings which had fallen into disuse. New businesses have breathed new life into it creating a vibrant community full of energy and enterprise.
At the present time extensive restoration work is being carried out in the Library at the Abbey, which prevents any bookings being taken for the Abbey itself. However, because of the exciting nature of the work, which has exposed some early fabric of the building, it has been made possible for those interested to follow the progress on a dedicated page on the Abbey section of their website which is at present under design.
To help compensate for possible disappointment they are introducing an exciting and expanded Garden Tour. This will be guided by head gardener, Patrick Driscall, who will lead parties on an historic journey through the history of the outstanding gardens at Combermere Abbey.
Film and Photography:
The house and grounds provide a varied and rich background for film and photography and there are a growing band of connoisseurs who have discovered its allure and versatility. Their house manager offers full support for the crews and we offer accommodation in the holiday cottages for overnight shoots. They handle all clients completely professionally and they get a dedicated service.
The Holiday Cottages:
The original Stables, built in 1837 were converted thirteen years ago into a group of luxurious self-catering cottages designed to the highest standards which attract visitors from far and wide. Whether you prefer an active holiday or a relaxed and pampered one, the options available to you at Combermere Abbey are many.
In the surrounding countryside of Cheshire and Shropshire there are excellent shops, pubs, restaurants and market towns to explore. Combermere promotes local foods and activities and guests can sample hampers and meals made from locally sourced producers. All the options are highlighted in their Website, which has full details of the holiday cottages, events and open days.
The Walled Gardens:
The extensive five acre walled gardens at Combermere are split into three separate spaces, and have been completely restored during the past fourteen years. The first phase saw the creation of The Geometric Garden now used by holiday guests and the planting of the world’s only Fruit Tree Maze in the top semicircular space.
2007 saw the final phase of the restoration with the rebuilding of the beautiful fan shaped greenhouse - the centrepiece of the maze. Renamed The Glasshouse, it has also enabled the rebuilding of the garden service buildings to provide toilets and catering facilities.
Weddings and Events in The Glasshouse:
Sitting proudly at the apex of the gardens, this new state of the art building is now used for marriage ceremonies, functions, corporate entertainment and cultural events. Seating up to 120 for the ceremony or stand up reception and 60 for a catered event, it also has a dedicated marquee for receptions up to 150 persons.
It can be booked with or without accommodation for close family and there is a dedicated romantic hideaway package for the celebrating couple. Its 180 degrees views of the sky and gardens make it a stylish and individual place to celebrate a special occasion.
