Delgatie Castle Description
Most recently the home of the late Capt. Hay of Delgatie, Feudal Baron, and is the Clan Hay Centre, this uniquely Scottish Castle has largely been in the Hay family for the last 650 years. It was taken from the Earl of Buchan after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, when Robert the Bruce routed the invading English army. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Delgatie for three days after the Battle of Cirrichie in 1562. Her bedchamber is on view to the visitor.
Like many Scottish castles, Delgatie was rebuilt in the 16th century. The invention of the siege gun necessitated greater fortifications, and the 1570 rebuilding provided 8-14 feet thick walls. The main tower dates from about 1100, while its final extension with the battlement walk above the string course was completed in 1579. Both wings were added in 1743 with the chapel and dovecote on the west and the kitchen and servants' quarters on the east.
Some of the rooms still boast their original 16-century painted ceilings, which are considered some of the finest in Scotland. Strange animals are depicted - some with human heads thought to represent the actual inhabitants of the time.
The turnpike stair of 97 treads is reputed to be one of the widest in Scotland, measuring over five foot. It is unusual for being built within the thickness of the wall.
It is set peacefully within its extensive estate, with gardens and many delightful walks for guests to enjoy. The Castle's location provides an ideal touring base, with the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness both approximately an hours' drive away. Many of the loveliest areas of the Highlands are easily accessible, as well as the beautiful coastline known as the "Scottish Riviera."
Delgatie has tremendous character and a distinct sense of history. This combined with its picturesque setting makes it an ideal stopping place for visitors wishing to experience Scotland. Whether for a half-day visit and refreshment in the cosy Tea Room or for a lengthier stay, Delgatie is sure to please. Delgatie Castle won the Aberdeen & Grampian Tourist Board Visitor Experience Award for 2003. This was decided from forms that visitors to the Castle sent in to the Tourist Board nominating the Castle with comments like - such great hospitality, wonderful welcome, like being welcomed into someone's home, delicious home baking.

What a gem of a place to visit, no hassle or tours just browse at your pace in what is a magical personal place. Food in the Laird's larder is excellent and service really good. Even the gardener was friendly.

Well, what can I say? We have stayed at Delgatie Castle three times now and plan to return again. My husband is in a wheelchair and Elmwood meets his needs perfectly. The children love the castle and the Laird's Kitchen is second to none! It’s well worth a visit.
