Gawsworth Hall Description
Owned, run and much-loved by the Richards family, this lived-in historic house features fine paintings, furniture, stained glass and impressive grounds.
Here lived Mary Fitton, the mysterious Dark Lady at the centre of Shakespeare's sonnets, and the Fitton family Chapel, first licensed in 1365, is still in use today. The Hall, rebuilt in 1480, then further remodelled two centuries later, was also the subject of the most famous duel in English history, when in 1712 Lord Mohun and the Duke of Hamilton fought over the estates and both were killed.
More recently, the last professional jester in the country, Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson, lived in the house. Eccentric to the last, he lies in the nearby spinney known as Maggoty Johnson's Wood, having shot an arrow and requested to be buried wherever it landed.
These days, the Elizabethan pleasure garden and tilting ground host an annual classic car day, bank holiday craft fairs and one of the Britain's finest open air theatres, with recent sell-out performances from Jimmy Carr, Kate Rusby and John Bishop. Further details of this historic property can be found on their own Website.
Each Christmas, international prize-winning floral designer Barry Grey transforms the Hall with fabulous swags, garlands and spectacular arrangements for his Yuletide festival.
