Goodwood House Summary

Goodwood House Description

Goodwood HouseGoodwood is one of the finest sporting estates in the world. At its heart lies Goodwood House, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon, direct descendants of King Charles II. Today, it is still lived in by the present Duke’s son and heir, the Earl of March and Kinrara, with his wife and family. Their home is open to the public on at least 60 days a year. This is the only house that belonged to a son of Charles II that can be visited.

Set in the exquisitely decorated and gilded interiors of Goodwood House, the art collection is at an international level, with a magnificent collection of English paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. These include the celebrated and glorious views of London by Canaletto, and magnificent sporting scenes by George Stubbs, England’s most famous animal painter.

The rooms are filled with fine furniture, Gobelins tapestries and Sèvres porcelain, all from the 18th century, as well as English Regency furniture in the Egyptian Dining Room. One of the most important sets of French furniture in the world is on display. Special works of art are regularly rotated and displayed. Arrangements to see the books can be made by written application to the Curator. (There is a special charge for these viewings).

This is a lively house to visit, in which the full calendar of both personal and public events mean that changes are always being made, whether it be new orchids for the rooms or an alteration in furniture layout. Something is always going on at Goodwood, giving the House the feel of a real living, working family home. It has a very special relaxed and friendly atmosphere,

Goodwood is not only a beautiful house to visit on an open day, but is also renowned for its entertaining. The House enjoys a reputation for excellence as a location for unforgettable weddings, parties and events. With its 12,000 acres, Goodwood is now world famous as one of England’s most lively and fashionable country estates.

Goodwood’s own organic farm, the largest in England, provides food for the table in the various restaurants on the estate.

Many sports are pursued that have over the centuries been the favourites of various Dukes of Richmond: these include horseracing, motorsport, flying and golf. It was at Goodwood that cricket was first played. Situated discreetly at the park gates is the luxurious and the recently decorated Goodwood Hotel.

Far more information on all the incredibly varied activities at Goodwood - including: conferences, seminars, private dining and entertaining, plus their race course, motorsport and golf - is available on their Website.
