Middleham Castle Description
This impressive fortress, built in the 12th century, was the childhood home of Richard III who made it his principal castle in the north of England. It was here that the future king, under the care of Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, learned the military skills and courtly manners appropriate to a young man of his rank. His only son, Edward, was born and lived his short life at the castle.
Before the present castle was built, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification made from earth and timber existed at Middleham. The earthworks of this 11th-century fortification still survive on the high ground to the south-west of the existing castle. The principal building on the new site was a formidable stone keep, one of the largest in England, which today commands stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the battlements.
During the 15th century, extensive improvements and additions were made to the castle which reflected the dignity and status of its owners. Middleham became a centre of patronage and influence, a military headquarters, and a focus of social life, serving the needs of three of the greatest lords of the century, Salisbury, Warwick and Gloucester.
