Paxton House & Country Park Description
Built to the design of John Adam in 1758 for a dashing young Scottish laird, Patrick Home of Billie, Paxton House is one of the finest 18th century Palladian country houses in Britain boasting interiors by Robert Adam and the pre-eminent collection of furniture in Scotland by Chippendale and William Trotter.
The magnificently restored regency Picture Gallery, the largest in a Scottish Country House, exhibits over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland and focuses on British Art from 1760 to 1840, the hey day of Paxton House itself. Here you will see masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alongside many works of local interest such as Sam Bough's Berwick upon Tweed and the Rev John Thomson's Fast Castle. The fully restored working Georgian kitchen is complete with active charcoal stoves and baking oven.
With 12 period rooms to explore; over 80 acres of gardens, woodlands and parkland; a mile of riverside walks along the resplendent Tweed; a prestigious new fishing museum; croquet lawn and 9 hole putting green as well as children's activities and nature trails; picnic areas and adventure playground; gift shop and licensed tearoom and superb events and exhibitions, Paxton House is a hidden gem not to be missed!

The Grounds - Walks, Wildlife and Conservation:
Overlooking the majestic River Tweed, Paxton House lies at the heart of eighty acres of woodland, parkland and gardens, originally landscaped in the 18th century by Robert Robinson and now incorporating a variety of footpaths, walks and trails for visitors to enjoy. The Tweed, which here forms the border between Scotland and England, sweeps round in a great curve not far from the south front of the house.
Many new shrubs and literally thousands of bulbs introduced into the grounds now create a sea of daffodils and narcissi each spring. Take a stroll among rare shrubs, rhododendrons and herbaceous borders, visit the fountain and well garden or follow the riverside paths and you may see salmon, heron, cormorants and mute swans. If you are patient you should also see hares and deer.
Paxton House prides itself on its strong commitment to the environment and conservation. Bird and bat boxes together with excellent red squirrel woodland and riverside bird hides have helped encourage local wildlife, establishing Paxton House as a great wildlife watching location and a haven for nature photographers. In 1997, they won the BT Environment Week Challenge Award thanks to the efforts of the Estate Custodian, Tommy Patterson and some hard working volunteers! Through their environmental education sessions, they are also ensuring that future generations are taught to care for the environment.

M. Monteith (14 August 2010)
Today we attended fish tagging at the Paxton House Netting Station, and found it very interesting and informative. The Tweed Foundation Members and all who were involved were very friendly and patient when answering our questions. We really enjoyed ourselves, and will definitely be back. Thank you.
