Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate Description
This working Georgian cotton mill, built in 1784 by entrepreneur Samuel Greg, provides a fascinating insight into the early Industrial Revolution. The complex of buildings which grew up around the magnificent 50-ton waterwheel charts the growth of cotton textile manufacture from cottage industry to noisy weaving factory.
Through hands-on opportunities visitors can learn about the processes involved, and the restored Apprentice House, where pauper apprentice children lived, gives an insight into the arduous social conditions of the time.
The Steam Power Galleries, with an 1830 beam engine steaming daily and audiovisual theatre, show how steam complemented water power through the 19th century.
The Mill is set in Styal Country Park in an unspoilt part of the River Bollin valley, with many pleasant riverside walks in attractive woodland. The Mill and Country Park – with its factory colony village – form one of the most complete surviving examples of a working industrial estate.
