I was brought up in Paris Hall, lived there throughout the 60s (remember the Bergls next door) and as children we would play in the overgrown gardens of Copped Hall, imagining the legendary secret passage that led to Waltham Abbey.

I am surprised the archaeology work currently being undertaken has not been mentioned in the articles on Copped Hall Essex. The Tudor foundations on the older Medieval Manor are undergoing excavation by West Essex Archaeology Group with Copped Hall Trust. The digs are open to the public in the summer, with opportunities to dig.

My grandfather worked on the Copped Hall estate for many years and name of the house, called New Farm House on the estate was changed, when the granddaughter of the Wythes family inherited the house she changed it to Paris Hall after him. He lived in the cottages on the high road, no 11 Griffins Wood Cotaages. His name was George Paris, his wife Jessie. When we were children, my brother and I used to play in the ruins of the hall, it was a wonderful time. If anyone remembers my family I would love you to get in touch.

I have not been to Copped Hall yet. It was owned by my ancestors, on my mother's side. The Cranfields, Earls of Middlesex.

We came across Copped Hall when we lived in Epping in the 90s. We had seen it from the motorway and went on a mission to find it! Will never forget how spooked I was as we approached, a real feeling of dread and spookiness. Needless to say we became very fond of it and grew to love it. What great work is being done, we will return one day!

I have never been to Copped Hall but have often wondered at it's past and have found some really good books on the history, with photos, in Harlow Library. I have often seen it from the M25 and been partly down the drive to it on business. Now I know one can visit, I shall most certainly do so this year.

I used to stay with friends in the late 70s at the 'White House' on Copped Hall Estate, and used to spend a lot of time around the mansion. It would really creep me out and I hated to go past a huge tree (not sure what type of tree) and I was later told that a monk had been murdered by the tree. I'm so glad that the mansion is now being restored.

I would like to return to this place. It is not far from London, and the house is wonderful. It was a pleasure to visit such an excellent place.

I lived in the Wood House as a teenager from 1960 to 1965. We used to explore the gardens behind Copped Hall and we would creep into what was left of the house. In those days the structure was apparently used for growing mushrooms and, no doubt in connection with this, we would see what to us were enormous stacks of wooden crates, all marked 'Gordons Dry Gin'.

I grew up in Epping in the 1950s. Copped Hall always evoked fear in our little hearts - superstition abound - and we shivered as we were told of the ghostly lights that shone through the windows late at night. I remember seeing Copped Hall on the horizon as I travelled along the main A11 road and thought it a very grand place. Little did I know it was just a facade at that time. I am so happy it is now appreciated for its historical value.

Luckily I had the opportunity to have a guided tour and much detailed information about Copped Hall. I only can tell that I was very impressed by the people who have done such a good work on the property already. Copped Hall is wonderful and I recommend to go there and have a look while the work is going on. There is not only the house but also a wonderful park and a walled garden with many old greenhouses to be restored. But if you go there be generous and give more than the entrance fee you are asked for. The people there have deserved any financial support that is available.

I happened across Copped Hall in the late 1980s when motoring through to Manchester with two friends. I stopped and we crossed a fence then walked across a field to see the Mansion and Grounds. After just looking over this site, and comparing your photos to those I took with my friends at the time we were there... I CONGRATULATE YOU ALL ON THE EFFORTS YOU HAVE UNDERTAKEN TO SAVE THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF BRITISH HISTORY!

I used to ride through Copped Hall when I was a teenager 40 years ago and in later years walked through the grounds. It is a fascinating place - rather spooky with lots of crows, pigeons and pigs and I would happily become a member of the 'Friends of Copped Hall' as I would like to be able to visit from time to time.
