Squerryes Court & Gardens Summary

Squerryes Court & Gardens Description

Squerryes CourtSquerryes is one of those houses that when first seen, particularly in certain lights appears to be so perfect as to be almost surreal. Perhaps this has something to do with the luminosity of the surrounding countryside, beloved of so many connoisseurs of special locations and those for whom Kent really does it.

There has been a dwelling on the site for at least 800 years, but whatever had been was replaced in 1681 by the present William and Mary house, built for Sir Nicholas Crispe. A few years later the 1st Earl of Jersey purchased the property but it was sold by the 3rd Earl in 1731 to John Warde whose descendants live there still.

The beautiful gardens were laid out in 1700 in the formal Anglo Dutch style, and later re-landscaped in the middle of the 18th century. Since then there has been some return to the 1700s, drawing inspiration from a precise 1719 illustration that goes right to the wire. This is a garden for all seasons

Exquisitely furnished rooms, with a backdrop old master paintings from the Italian, 17th century Dutch and 18th century English schools, provide the ideal setting for corporate or private events, and marquee wedding receptions are made welcome amidst this formal yet homely display of good order and understanding. The entrance hall will accommodate 60 people for conferences or dining, the dining room seats up to 50 people, and the conservatory is also available for receptions and dining.

For early morning events breakfast can be provided. All rooms are fully licensed and the catering kitchen is fitted out to a high standard that reflects in the quality of the meals. A list of preferred suppliers is available.

Days of simulated game shooting are popular and half or whole days can include breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Tours of the house take around one hour and shorter tours can be arranged; a programme of outside events attracts local people and visitors from further afield who enjoy the atmosphere of this friendly and accommodating home from home. More information is available on their Website.
