Details

Seat of the 7th Earl of Cardigan who led the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854, today the house is the home of Mr. Edmund and the Hon. Mrs. Brudenell and the rooms on show are regularly used by their family and friends. It has grown in size as generations have made their own mark through the years, providing the visitor with an interesting yet complementary mixture of styles. There is a considerable collection of family portraits and possessions, including memorabilia from the Crimean War.

The gardens are mainly to the south and west of the house and include long borders, old-fashioned roses and specimen trees. Close to the house there is a parterre designed by David Hicks in the 1990s. The topiary teapots, inspired by the finial on the Millenium obelisk, form a fine feature as they mature.

Open parkland lies across water from the terraced gardens providing enchanting vistas in many directions. The more energetic visitor can discover these during a rewarding walk in the tranquil surroundings. As well as the flora, there is also a diversity of bird life ranging from red kites to kingfishers and black swans to little grebes. On public open days home-made scones and cakes are available in the Old Kitchen and souvenirs can be found in the Courtyard Gift Shop. Group visits are available at anytime by prior arrangement, with booked lunches and suppers available.
