Thornton Manor Description
In 1893 William Hesketh Lever purchased Thornton manor, a house in the gothic revival style dating from the 1840's. In the years 1896 - 1897 the house was completely rebuilt, the main facades in particular, in an Elizabethan Style, including Dutch gables and mullioned windows, by architects Douglas & Fordham. At this stage the house was entered from the South West, the present day garden front.
Two years later in 1899, the little known architect JJ Talbot added the stables. All of these and subsequent additions were in local red sandstone, common to both the area and the period. The first work of the new century was to utilise the stables more effectively by the installation of an arcade to the side that faced the gardens, converting it into an open air dining room. This was followed in 1902 by JJ Talbot’s majestic masterpiece, the Music Room. Talbot tragically died the year it was completed, aged 31.
The finishing touches to Thornton Manor took place between 1912 - 1914 mainly concentrating on the new garden front. It was the death of Lady Leverhulme in 1913 that diverted Lord Leverhhulme's attention toward other projects and the building work at Thornton came to a close. Although the home of both his son and grandson, the 1st Viscount's legacy of Thornton Manor remained largely unchanged, except for the addition of the large indoor swimming pool in the 1960s.
The house makes an ideal location for all corporate events from conferences to product launches. The music room can cater for up to 200 delegates with many smaller meeting rooms available. Your Reviews of Thornton Manor
Lydia Evans (29 August 2007)
My beautiful niece Laura married Darren on Friday at the Manor, and I have to say what a spectacular setting and most enjoyable day it was. The grounds and surroundings where we had the wedding breakfast were simply quite breathtaking. I think the settings are very special, thanks to all the staff at the Manor who obviously worked incredibly hard to ensure it was a most memorable day. It was wonderful and thanks once again.
