West Dean Gardens Description

A place of tranquility and beauty in the rolling South Downs all year round, West Dean Gardens features a restored walled kitchen garden with some of the finest Victorian glasshouses in the country, a circular walk through a 49-acre arboretum offers breathtaking views of the estate and its fine flint house and parkland setting. Rustic summerhouses, a 300ft Edwardian pergola, ornamental borders and a pond contrast with over 200 varieties of carefully trained fruit trees, rows of vegetables and exotic produce behind glass.

Since 1622 the house and gardens at West Dean have evolved in harmony, creating a place of beauty and tranquility in the rolling South Downs. Visiting the Gardens, you are immersed in a classic nineteenth century designed landscape.

• 1st March - 31st October: daily, 10.30 am - 5 pm (last entry at 4.30 pm)
• 1st November - 28th February: daily, 10.30 am - 4 pm (last entry at 3.30)
• Closed: 24th December - 31st Janaury
