Westminster Hall Description
Having established his hold over London from the Tower, William I moved to more comfortable quarters at Westminster. William Rufus was monarch when Westminster Hall was built in 1099.
Since then the Great Hall has always been in use, initially as a place of festivity and entertainment, later with more serious purpose.
It has been suggested that the very size of the building was instrumental in ensuring that Westminster became the administrative centre of the country.
Over the centuries the Hall has played its part in the great affairs of state, both judicial and ceremonial. Few of that era will ever forget the lying in state of Sir Winston Churchill.
