The Howard family are woven into every scene of the tapestry of English history and Arundel Castle is their home, so be prepared for 1000 years of history when you visit. This October they will be recalling the earliest days of the Norman keep to celebrate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings fought only 50 miles away. With combat, weapons, armour and crafts displays, visitors will be able to see what life was like for those living in a castle following the Battle of Hastings, and the building of the first phase of the castle. What you see today at Arundel has much to do with the later history of this great Catholic family; the paintings, furniture and treasures amassed by The Collector Earl and his descendants and the refurbishment of the castle completed in 1900. The gardens have been extensively restored and are now one of the castle’s chief attractions. Queen Victoria visited here and you should too.
