Doodle a castle on a beer mat, it will look like Eastnor. It is a dramatic, fairytale castle surrounded by a lake with magnificent views of the rolling Herefordshire countryside only two and a half hours by car from central London. Not medieval at all, Eastnor is a 19th century ‘mock’ castle in the gothic taste. Inside it is all painted ceilings and gilded fan vaulting, lavish and decorative in the extreme. The house is open to visitors in the school holidays and always has lots for kids to do. This summer there are circus skills, photography, baking, pottery, Knight’s School, dinosaurs, space and science as well as Cirque de Soleil, the LakeFest music festival and Fireworks Championship. Brides and wedding guests make good use of the romantic atmosphere and award winning guest bedrooms, while there are cottages and a campsite for holidaymakers.
