Salisbury Cathedral Summary

Salisbury Cathedral Description

Salisbury Cathedral is one of the finest medieval cathedrals in Britain, it remains today an awe-inspiring setting for huge, majestic events, yet also a place for quiet prayer and reflection. Immortalised by Constable in his paintings, the Cathedral was more recently judged to be the Best View in Britain by Country Life magazine.

Salisbury is unique amongst medieval English cathedrals, as it was built within one century with no substantial later additions. The building itself is remarkable, a testimony to the faith and practical skills of those who erected it. It was built in just 38 years (1220 - 1258 AD) and is a magnificent example of Early English Gothic architecture surrounded by 8 acres of lawn and Britain's largest medieval Close. The Cloisters, Chapter House and West Front were all completed by 1266, with the spire (the tallest in Britain, 123m/404ft), added a generation later.

But it is much more than an historical monument. It is the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury diocese and so the Mother Church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset. It is a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Every day, week in week out, for century after century, God is worshipped here. Above all it is a place of prayer.

Other fascinating treasures include: the best preserved of only four surviving original Magna Carta (1215 AD), a unique 13th century frieze of bible stories in the octagonal Chapter House and Europe’s oldest working clock (1386 AD). Boy and girl choristers sing daily services, continuing a tradition of worship that goes back nearly 800 years.

Open every day of the year, volunteer guides are on duty most days providing friendly and interesting tours at regular intervals free of charge – or you can simply pick up a self-guiding leaflet in one of 12 languages and wander around at you own pace.

If you have the time, book ahead 01722 555156 and make sure you take one of the amazing tours of the tower and roof spaces. Lasting over an hour and a half, you climb 332 steps (in easy stages!) by narrow spiral staircases to the top of the tower 225ft above the ground.

There are wonderful views across the city and up into the spire which still retains the medieval wooden scaffold around which it was built. Recent research has proved that many of the roof timbers are original dating back to the 1250s, with some very early example of Arabic numerals.

The glass roofed Refectory Restaurant and shop provide views to the spire soaring high above. Both are open from 9.30am to 5.30pm, with all the food freshly prepared daily in the restaurant.

Group packages are available for larger parties (15+ people) or they can tailor a visit to suit your interest. Call their group Co-ordinator on 01722 555124 for more information.

Much more information, including the history, plans, maps and photographs, is available on their Website.
